I’ve always savored a good cup of coffee to jumpstart my day and enjoy with my daily morning ritual. Still, I’ve never been in the place to buy my own espresso machine, settling instead for a good coffee maker with a strong brewing function. Operating within these limits, I buckled down to craft the perfect oat cream coffee recipe. I know that I wanted a strong drip base with oat milk being my dairy choice. However, it needed a punch, a sweet note, something. Then, it dawned on me, why not add a flavored oat creamer? This was the answer. The 3:1 ratio of milk to creamer jazzed up my ordinary drip while working magic for espresso and Americanos. And to top it off, I sweetened my coffee with a dollop of turbinado sugar or enjoyed this molasses-tasting sugar mixed with my froth. Whatever you decide, you simply can’t go wrong!

Ingredients
  • 16 oz. water
  • 5 T. coffee grounds, see note.
  • ¾ cup extra creamy, original oat milk, like Planet Oat, found at Safeway.
  • ¼ cup flavored oat creamer, like Silk’s the Vanilla or Oatmeal Cookie One, found at Safeway.
  • Turbinado sugar to taste, try mixing it with your froth.
  • Note: coffee measurements depend on coffee machine’s strength of brew or if serving espresso or Americanos.
Directions
  • Step 1 First, pour the water into the coffee maker and measure out your grounds if you’re making drip coffee. I fill my machine to its 3-cup mark, which measures the equivalent of 2 standard cups. I then add 4 machine scoops of coffee, which approximates 5 standard tablespoons of coffee. My Ninja maker has a setting for stronger brew, which I use for this purpose. If your maker does not have such a setting, cut back on the water, or add more coffee grounds. Alternatively, you can make espresso or an Americano. In either case, brew your coffee now.
  • Step 2 Next, when your coffee is brewing, you can take advantage of the lull to pour the oat milk and creamer into your frother—just be careful to not exceed the maximum limit or the contents will spill over. My frother, which is a stand-alone Nespresso, will only accommodate half—6 T. of oat milk and 2 T. of oat creamer. So, froth the maximum that you can.
  • Step 3 Finally, when the coffee is done brewing, and the oat milk is done frothing, pour the coffee in a mug, filling it halfway up. Then, pour the milk in the same mug, filling it the rest of the way up. Note: my frother only has the capacity for 1 coffee drink, so if you are making 2 drinks and yours is like mine, you may have to run a second batch. You can double the measurements or use the ratio of 3:1 oat milk to oat creamer. Also, if you’re making espresso, you’ll probably need to multiply the measurements of oat milk and creamer. Pour into 2 mugs and add turbinado sugar to further sweeten the coffee to your taste. Consider mixing the turbinado sugar with the froth and enjoy when hot!

There is nothing like a cup of coffee to jumpstart your day.  Needless to say, I’ve had plenty of time to hone this recipe, and as luck had it, I stumbled across two secrets: turbinado sugar and a 3:1 ratio of oat milk to creamer.
